Call to Prayer for March 12, 2018

‘Love comes from God’ (thoughts shared by Daphne Youngblood, support staff for Georgia WMU/WEM) There was a time in my life when I thought I knew what love was and how to show love to others, but it was based on what I thought they wanted or whatever it took to be liked. If love is based on doing things to get a certain result or a payout, that is not love at all, but it is selfish and self-serving. The love 1 Corinthians 13 speaks about is born only of God. God loved us first and in 1 John 4:19 He proved that when He sent His Son to this earth from heaven to save us. A few weeks ago, my husband and I walked outside and found a girl in our truck attempting to steal from...

‘Love looks like . . . ‘–  We are in the middle of the ‘Love’ month, but to look around us and to watch the news, there seems to be a shortage on love – real, unconditional love – the kind of love explained by Paul in 1 Corinthians 13 – which we often call the love chapter of the Bible. Yes, we do the cards, the flowers, the candy, and even say ‘I love You!’ – but love isn’t something that is expressed one day out of the year – it isn’t something that we put on the calendar – real love can only be expressed and demonstrated out of a heart that loves God and overflows with His Spirit living within us.   When Paul begins to share what real love looks like in 1 Corinthians...

‘Love is . . .’ (thoughts shared by Marni Laughman, daughter-in-love of Mary Laughman and wife of Steve Laughman, Centennial Baptist Associational Missionary) – If you asked me to finish the sentence, “Love is…” I would reply “…a verb.” Every. Single. Time. While I was growing up, if I ever heard DC Talk’s song “Luv is a Verb” I could not get it out of my head.   However, I am a skeptic at heart, questioning everything so as to hold only onto the good (1 Thessalonians 5:21). As a teenager I thought that love was the emotion that I felt for Steve, but this song was telling me that love was a choice. Because this lyric did not sit well with me, I turned to...

‘Love is . . .’ (thoughts shared by Daphne Youngblood, support staff for Georgia WMU/WEM) – As I considered the great love stories of the Bible to concentrate on for this week, I was drawn to Hosea and Gomer in the book of Hosea in the Old Testament. This book in Scripture isn’t just about their difficult love story but about God’s love for Israel and even us today. You might think this is the worst example of a love story ever, but I think it’s one that resembles our relationship to God and one of great love, hope, trust and promise. True love is born in our hearts when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior and the Holy Spirit indwells our heart to guide and encourage...

‘Real Freedom and Independence’ – Today we celebrate our American independence which was fought and paid for by those who felt it important to live in a country where we understand ‘that all are created equal . . . endowed by their Creator . . . with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’.  Many times we forget that we only have these freedoms because they are bestowed upon us from our Creator – the One who loves us and blesses us with ‘every good and perfect gift ‘(James 1:17).  We are blessed to be Americans, but even more important, we are blessed to know and understand the freedom we have as believers – we know the Truth (Jesus) Who has set us free...
