Do You Know God is Yahweh-Nissi?

God is Yahweh-Nissi…the Lord is my Banner

At the beginning of Exodus 4, the Lord asked Moses, “What is that in your hand?” and Moses replied, “A shepherd’s staff”.   That staff was a foreshadowing of the name Yahweh-Nissi.  Moses’ staff was always with him, just like Yahweh.  And time after time, God used the staff to demonstrate His protection, provision, and power.  Moses’ staff was held like a banner before the Israelites.  It gave them assurance that Yahweh was always present before them and acting mightily on their behalf.  He does the same for us today if we will simply choose to live under His banner.

Meditate on it, Pray it, Believe it—His Word is true.

  • Meditate on it . . . As God instructs in Joshua 1:8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate (listen, think, take it to heart, absorb it) on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Exodus 17: 8-16 (NLT) While the people of Israel were still at Rephidim, the warriors of Amalek attacked them. Moses commanded Joshua, “Choose some men to go out and fight the army of Amalek for us. Tomorrow, I will stand at the top of the hill, holding the staff of God in my hand.” So Joshua did what Moses had commanded and fought the army of Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of a nearby hill. As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle.

After the victory, the Lord instructed Moses, “Write this down on a scroll as a permanent reminder, and read it aloud to Joshua: I will erase the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means “the Lord is my banner”). He said, “They have raised their fist against the Lord’s throne, so now the Lord will be at war with Amalek generation after generation.”

Psalm 60:4-5 (NLT) But you have raised a banner for those who fear you—a rallying point in the face of attack. Now rescue your beloved people. Answer and save us by your power.

Song of Solomon 2:4 (NASB) He has brought me to his banquet hall, And his banner over me is love.

Isaiah 11:10 (NLT) In that day the heir to David’s throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world. The nations will rally to him, and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.

  • Pray it…

Praise God for being Yahweh-Nissi!  He is your banner!

Thank God for raising a banner for you, one who fears Him.  Thank Him for being your rallying point in the face of attack.  Thank Yahweh-Nissi for rescuing you-saving you by His power!  Thank Him for your salvation.  Think of other ways He has been your banner and you were rescued…thank Him.  Thank Him for times of victory in your life!  Thank Him specifically for ways that He has protected you, provided for you, and demonstrated His power for you.  Thank your Banner for always going before you.

Imagine being escorted into Yahweh’s banquet hall.  What do you see?  Smell?  Hear? Feel?  Taste?  Be still and sit under Yahweh-Nissi’s love.  No one loves you like He does.  Allow His lavish love to wash over you and refresh you!

Thank Jesus for being the banner of salvation to the world.  Praise Him as you look forward to seeing the nations rally around Him.  Rejoice in knowing that when you leave this earth you will be in His presence in a glorious place!

Just as Aaron and Hur held up Moses’ hands, hold up (intercede for) the missionaries who are holding high the Banner among the nations.  Pray for them to not grow weary in the battle and for them to live under Yahweh-Nissi.  Pray that the workers will feel His presence and look to Him for their protection, provision and power as they rally around The Banner.  Pray for the people of the nations to be rescued and saved so that they can come to the banquet hall and sit under His banner of love.

  • Believe it—His Word is true

As a soldier of the cross, Yahweh-Nissi, the Lord your Banner, is flying on the front lines of any battle you will face.  To paraphrase a thought from David Platt, remember, “we are fighting from victory, not for victory”.  Hold The Banner high!
