Monthly Focus May 2016 – Praying for the Next Generation

Jesus showed us by His example in Mark 10:14 that children were important and should be cherished.  When the disciples tried to turn the children away because they didn’t want Jesus to be bothered, His response was ‘Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God’.   By neglecting to pray for our children and teaching them the things of God, we are hindering them from coming to Jesus.   Ed Stetzer, vice president of LifeWay Research and Ministry Development, the research arm of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, made the following statement in response to why young people are turning away from the...

January: Pray-er from the Past, Joshua

Joshua – Numbers 13:16…Hosea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim, was born in Egypt as a slave.  His name was later changed to Joshua by Moses.  Joshua (Yeshua in Hebrew) means “the Lord is Salvation.” Numbers 13-14…Joshua along with Caleb was two of the men chosen by, at the Lord’s command, to explore the land of Canaan.  Angry because the Israelites believed the false report of the other 10 spies, God sent them into the wilderness to wander for 40 years.  Joshua and Caleb were the only 2 of the spies to survive. Numbers 27:18…At the request of Moses, God chose Joshua to succeed Moses as the leader of the Israelites after his death.  Joshua was described by God as “a...

November: Pray-er from the Past, Moses

We continue our focus on Old Testament pray-ers and truths we can learn from their prayers. Moses – Protected by God as an infant, trained to be a leader in the house of Pharaoh, and after being called by God to be the one to lead His children out of their captivity in Egypt, Moses became a mighty intercessor.  His powerful intercessions were more than a match for the murmurings of Israel. What can we learn from the prayers of Moses? True prayer is a two-way conversation (Exodus 3:11-14; Exodus 4:10-13) – ‘Moses said unto God  . . . God said unto Moses’.  When we talk to God in prayer, we should listen to hear His response.  Moses understood this as he and God had the...

June: Pray-er from the Past, Abraham

Our monthly focus for this next year will be a study each month on Old Testament pray-ers and truths we can learn from their prayers. I recently read the following entitled ‘The Common Prayer’ written in 1873 by the popular evangelist and publisher, Dwight L. Moody: ‘Those who have left the deepest impression on this sin-cursed earth have been men and women of prayer.  You will find that ‘prayer’ has been the mighty power that has moved not only God, but man.  Abraham was a man of prayer, and angels came down from heaven to converse with him. Jacob’s prayer was answered in the wonderful interview at Peniel that resulted in his having a mighty blessing and in softening...

May: Prayer Partnership with Israel

Why pray for Israel?  Why pray for Israel now?  Will our prayers make a difference?  These are all questions that I have had to answer as a result of traveling with a group of women on a 10-day Prayer Journey through the country of Israel.   Prior to going to the Holy Land, I had always heeded the words from Psalms 122:6 that we were to ‘pray for the peace of Jerusalem’. My interpretation of this was that I was praying for the return of Christ because that is the only answer for peace to come to Jerusalem.  As a believer, I have always prayed for and supported the rights of the Jewish people to live in their own country.   As an American, I have prayed for our country...
