Call to Prayer for September 23, 2013

‘The battle is not yours, but God’s… ’ – In 2001, the scripture from 2 Chronicles 20 was a comfort and strength for me and my husband, Jack.  Early in the year, I had surgery for uterine cancer and then a few months later heard the words from my doctor that I had breast cancer. And if that wasn’t enough, my husband was told he had stomach cancer.  As I was going through surgery and radiation that summer, I came across the scripture from 2 Chronicles 20:15, ‘Be not afraid or dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s’.   God knew what I was going through and He was telling me that He was in charge and would take care of it.  As I continued to read through the chapter, I saw in verses 20-22 that when the enemy was about to attack, Jehoshaphat appointed singers among the people of Jerusalem to say as they went to battle, ‘Praise the Lord; for His mercy endures forever’.    They did as they were told and when the people began to sing and praise the Lord, the enemy was defeated.

It’s hard to sing and praise God in the middle of the battles we face every day.  But that is what He tells us to do.  As we begin to adore and worship God in our prayers and songs of praise, our focus shifts from us to Him.  He’s promised to never leave us or forsake us – especially when times are difficult.  My husband lost his physical battle with cancer, but the spiritual battles were won for both of us as our faith grew stronger in the One Who is always faithful.

This past weekend at our One in Prayer Women’s Retreat at Pinnacle, our guest speaker shared with us a difficult time in her life.  She shared that one morning as she could only pray two words, ‘I can’t’, God told her, ‘I can’.   We are powerless to do anything outside the power and strength of God.  I pray we will be reminded this week that ‘God can’ and that ‘He will’ walk through the difficult times with us – that He has promised to ‘walk through the valley’ with us – that the ‘battle is not ours, but His’.

My Prayer for you this week: ‘Father, thank You for Your Word which tells us the many promises that encourage and comfort us in our daily walk here on earth.  Thank You for always being with us every moment of every day and giving us the strength to face the battles of life.  Remind us to turn our eyes upon You and praise and worship You even when we are in those dark valleys.  Thank You for the assurance of eternal life with You and that this is not our final home.   Help us to encourage others this week as we reflect Christ in all we do.  We love You! In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

  1. I did not get to go to the conference, but I did experience times of heavy responsibilities ,grief, and stress. I told our Lord I felt that I was drowning. I needed him to hold my head up higher so I could breath in His peace. My Lord lowered the water level within hours. Now I can breath enough to sing His praises. “Lord, you can still calm the waters !”

  2. The Women’s Retreat provided the inspiration I needed to refresh and recommit to missions lifestyle. I really enjoyed hearing about your recent trip and seeing your collection of memorbilia. I am inspired to become more intense in my praying for the Son’s Homeland. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

  3. Thanks Mary for the words of encouragement. This weekend was very inspiring and uplifting.
    Have a blessed week.

  4. The joy of the Lord is our strength. Thanks for the reminder.
