Call to Prayer for January 2, 2017

‘Preparing for a New Year’ – (thoughts shared by Lisa Thompson, Vice President of Georgia WMU/WEM Executive Board) – When I was a teenager, New Year’s Eve was spent at the church for Watchnight services.  There were skits, musical numbers, and other “creative” offerings that may or may not have fit into the theme of “watching”. My memories include acting in some pretty silly skits and playing piano with my best friend, sometimes as background to some of the youth group skits. Most of the youth group acts were probably not very thought-provoking or serious, even if we thought we had a message.

Somehow the serious part of the service is in the background of my mind. I feel certain that our pastor was doing his part to help us focus on the coming year and how we could grow in Christ. We were more interested in hanging out with our friends, having fun, and staying out past midnight.

This last year brought a loss of mobility and independence due to a broken foot and surgeries, uncertainty in medical tests and surgery, and the loss of my mom in my life. Many of you faced other traumatic issues in your lives. Any success, joy, and anticipation seem to fade in the face of personal tragedies, hearing hatred in harsh words, and watching reports of unthinkable acts of violence in the world around us. Many are facing 2017 with fear and dread. Many others are hopeful that this New Year will bring a fresh start in their lives. The questions are also plentiful regarding our country and the world.

Change is sure to come. Do we know what will happen? No. But, God does. I am relieved that He is the One in control, aren’t you?

Isaiah 41:10, 13

‘Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the One who helps you.’”

As we prepare for this coming year, a fresh page on the calendar, let us be watchful and prayerful for opportunities to focus on Him, to renew our hearts and minds, and to share God’s love.

Father, as we prepare our hearts for a new year, an opportunity for fresh starts in so many areas, remind us that You are in control. We need not be fearful. Give us courage to take steps on a new and different path as You lead. Give us eager anticipation for new opportunities. Help us to be Your light and to share Your peace with those around us and with those we meet. Let us be bold in declaring Your Good News to a hurting world.

(During January, we will be sharing thoughts from several guest writers as we prepare for the New Year of 2017)

  1. Thank you Lisa for a great reminder and focus for the brand new year. Continuing to pray for you and your family in the loss of your mom.

  2. Great article!! Much needed!! Thank you!!

  3. Watch night services bring back a lot of memories. We always had those at my church growing up. I am also very glad that God is in control of all things in this world.
